The ceremonial cacao recipe is an ancient tradition that has been passed down through generations, evolving and enriching over time. At Cacao School, we honor this heritage and integrate it into our ceremonies, using pure cacao along with a variety of ingredients that enhance both its flavor and spiritual properties.
Essential Ingredients and Their Benefits
The foundation of any ceremonial cacao is pure, unprocessed cacao, prepared with love and respect. This cacao is rich in antioxidants and minerals, offering a deep and complex flavor that is already an experience on its own.
To this base, we add ingredients that not only enhance the flavor but also bring their own energy and magic to the ritual.
Flowers: Flowers add fragrance and spiritual properties. Rose petals are known to open the heart and promote love and compassion, while lavender brings calm and peace, helping to relax the mind and prepare the spirit for meditation.
Orange Peel: A touch of citrusy freshness that elevates the cacao’s flavor. The aroma of orange is energizing and can help awaken the senses, bringing mental clarity and focus.
Cinnamon: Adds warmth and a comforting aroma to the mixture. This spice supports circulation and overall well-being, and its sweet, spiced flavor pairs perfectly with cacao.
Mezcal: A few drops of mezcal add a unique depth to the drink. Mezcal, a traditional Mexican spirit, holds a strong connection to ancestral traditions and enhances the ceremonial experience.
Ginger, Pepper, or Chili: These ingredients add a spicy and warming touch. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits, while pepper and chili stimulate circulation, bringing a sense of warmth and energy.
Vanilla: Adds a hint of sweetness and smoothness to the cacao. Vanilla is known for its relaxing properties and ability to elevate mood, making the experience even more enjoyable.
Preparing Ceremonial Cacao
Making ceremonial cacao is a sacred and meditative process. Below is a basic recipe for one person, which you can customize according to your preferences, needs, and intentions.
Ingredients
- 35g of pure cacao
- 150ml of water
- 1 chai tea bag or similar
- 5g of rose petals (optional)
- Peel from half an orange (optional)
- 1 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (optional)
- 3 drops of mezcal (optional)
- 1cm square of fresh ginger or a pinch of pepper or chili (optional)
- 1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)

-
Add the cacao: Stir the pure cacao into the hot water until it fully dissolves.
-
Sweeten if desired: Add your preferred natural sweetener, stir, and pour into individual cups.
-
Add the mezcal: If you choose to use mezcal, add a couple of drops to each cup individually, only for those who wish to include it in their experience.
